DIETERICH — Two sixth-inning runs proved to be the difference as Stewardson-Strasburg claimed a 5-3 win over Dieterich in boys’ baseball Monday afternoon.

After surrendering three Dieterich runs in the bottom of the fifth to bring things to a 3-3 tie, the Comets struck for two in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good.

Kelvin Figgins picked up the win for Stew-Stras, coming into the game during the fifth inning and getting his team out of the inning with a tie. Tyler Wirth finished it off, allowing no baserunner over the final two frames while striking out four.

Phil Wetherell hit a two-run home run for the Comets, while Cody Rincker, Conrad Widdersheim and Ben Giertz all chipped in two base hits. For Dieterich, Mitch Nosbisch was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Darin Worman singled and doubled.

At Greenup

Four different Cumberland hitters had two-hit games as the host team knocked off Martinsville 7-2 in Little Illini Conference play.

Dillon Shupe tossed the complete game for the Pirates, allowing just two hits while walking one and fanning eight. Kye Butler singled and homered for Cumberland, knocking in three.

Cumberland is now 5-5 overall, and is also even in LIC play with a 2-2 mark.

At Noble

Eight different Odin hitters reached base as the visitors pounded out 12 hits and shut out host Noble by a 7-0 margin.

Noble managed just five hits in the contest, all of them singles, while going down on strikes 11 times.

Odin improves to 4-3 this year and hosts Breese Central today. Noble is now 7-7.

At Kinmundy

South Central continued its strong play this year, playing host to Vandalia Monday and coming away with a 5-1 win.

Wade Crain won it on the mound for the home team, allowing a mere five hits over seven innings while walking three and striking out three. He also chipped in a single to help his cause.

South Central is 10-2 and will travel to Centralia today.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis stepped out to a 1-0 lead and held on for a 4-0 victory over Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick.

Dillon Wallin pitched a five-hitter with one walk and seven strikeouts. Nick Wheeler was the tough-luck loser with seven hits, two walks and a strikeout.

The Wooden Shoes had seven hits, all singles by seven different players.

Nick Durbin and Wheeler had two singles each for the Eagles.

T-town improves to 8-3 and will head to Effingham St. Anthony for a 7 p.m. contest today.

At Newton

Newton blanked Marshall 9-0 with a six-run first inning and a three-run fourth.

The Eagles banged out 10 hits in the contest led by Trevor Scott with three doubles and four RBIs and Will May with two singles and an RBI.

Newton improves to 7-10 while Marshall drops to 6-5.
