Effingham St. Anthony High School did it one more time . . . well the 10th time straight that is . . . winning its own tennis sectional championship Saturday.

The Bulldogs put together 19 points followed by Salem 12, Effingham 8, Lawrenceville 8, Teutopolis 5, Flora 4, Newton 2, Olney 2, Robinson 2 and Vandalia 0.

It was an all-Bulldogs doubles championship as top-seeded Heather Esker and Kelly Jansen squared off against teammates Megan Zumbahlen and Kathleen Kay, seeded third. Esker and Jansen pulled out a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 victory for the title.

Esker and Jansen easily made it to the championship match, downing a Newton duo, 6-0, 6-1. The two then blanked a Lawrenceville pair 6-0, 6-0. They continued to dominant by downing Effingham's Ashley Kreke and Morgan McWhorter 6-0, 6-0.

Zumbahlen and Kay also had a pretty easy time, beating an Olney duo 6-1, 6-0, then blanking a tandem from Robinson 6-0, 6-0. They defeated Teutopolis' Amy Probst and Michelle Esker 6-3, 6-2 on the way to the title match.

Probst and Esker, seeded second, downed Effingham's unseeded Kreke and McWhorter 6-1, 6-1 for third place.

In singles play, Salem's Amanda Miller, seeded No. 1, claimed the title by defeating Lawrenceville's Ashley Lynch 6-0, 6-1. Lynch was seeded sixth.

The third-place match went to St. Anthony's Michelle Jansen over Effingham's Emma Johnson 7-6, 6-0.

The top four places advance to the State Tennis Finals, hosted by Prospect High School.

Local athletes advancing were St. Anthony's Esker-K. Jansen and Zumbahlen-Kay in doubles and M. Jansen in singles; Effingham's Johnson in singles and McWhorter-Kreke in doubles and T-town's M. Esker in singles.

"Ashley and Morgan played a tough match against Esker and Westjohn of Teutopolis and at one point in the third set they were down two-five and were able to come back and win it in a tiebreak," said EHS Coach Angela Woods. "After that long match they then faced the sixth seed from Salem which started after dark and came out the winners. Again they were down 2-5 in the second and came back. Both girls really turned it on even though they had been playing since 1 in the afternoon. Fatigue didn't get the best of them and they were thrilled to be qualified for state.

"On Saturday they had some stiff competition, losing to St. Anthony's H. Esker and K. Jansen and Teutopolis' M. Probst and M. Esker, finishing with fourth place at sectionals.

"Emma was given the fifth seed for the tournament. Her first match she won 6-1, 6-4. In the second round she won again 7-5, 6-4. That game gave her a spot at state. On Saturday, she played the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds and lost, finishing in fourth place.

"We tied for third overall at sectionals. Effingham hasn't had more than one singles or doubles team going to state in recent history. The girls are excited."
