Pitching was a big key to Effingham St. Anthony's doubleheader victory over Neoga in National Trail Conference softball play Thursday at Evergreen Hollow Park.

Take for example the opening game. Kristen Winkler went to the mound and shut down the Indians totally. The senior allowed no hits, one walk and struck out 10. Meanwhile, her teammates banged out eight hits in the contest and scored eight times for an 8-0 victory.

Then in the nightcap, Kelly Jansen scattered four hits, while walking none and striking out nine as the Bulldogs swept the doubleheader with a 9-1 win.

"Our pitching is on par as to where we want it to be," said St. Anthony Coach Crystal Tipton. "Kristen came up with a good game in the opener, pitching a no-hitter."

While Winkler was keeping Neoga off balance in the opener, her teammates took advantage of eight hits and six walks. The Bulldogs started off in the right direction with a 1-0 first inning lead. Allie Kabbes drew a walk in the leadoff spot and stole second. She eventually tagged home plate on a wild pitch.

In the second inning, Kelly McHugh singled with one out and proceeded to steal second. She came around on a single by Jenny Brown. Kabbes followed with a single and both runners came home on a double by Allison Murphy and the Bulldogs went ahead 4-0.

St. Anthony tallied three more runs in the third. Jessica Keller led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch. With one out, McHugh and Brown drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. A single by Kabbes brought home Keller. Murphy singled to bring home McHugh. The final run came when Mary Jo Bushur drew a bases-loaded walk and the Bulldogs led 7-0.

A final run came in the fourth with two outs. McHugh reached on a fielder's choice, took second on a steal and came home on a single by Brown.

"We're finally making contact and putting the ball in play," said Tipton. "That is what we've been working on in practice."

Murphy had a single, double and two RBIs, while Brown had two singles and two RBIs.

Winkler put the side down in order in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. She allowed one walk in the second.

In the second game, St. Anthony again jumped out early, taking a 1-0 lead in the first. Murphy laid down a bunt single and stole second. She came home on a double by Winkler.

The lead went to 2-0 in the second as Keller singled and came home on a single by Kabbes. In the third, St. Anthony pushed its lead to 4-0. Winkler singled and eventually came home on an error. Jansen reached base on an error and came home on a bases-loaded walk to Ann Bushur.

St. Anthony tacked on two more in the fourth as Michelle Dasenbrock had an infield single and Jansen reached on a fielder's choice. Naomi Gray's single brought home a run and Brianna Schuette singled home the second run and the Bulldogs led 6-0.

The final three runs came in the fifth. Murphy reached on an error and Winkler took first on a fielder's choice. M. Bushur loaded the bases with a single. K. Jansen followed with a single, scoring a run. Gray then came to bat for the second time and banged out a double to score two more runs.

K. Jansen kept the Indians off balance. She allowed a bunt single to Olivia Mintun in the first inning. Lexi Romack singled in the second. Mintun reached base in the third when she was hit by a pitch and stole second. Sammi James reached with a single in the fourth.

Neoga finally tallied a run in the fifth. With two outs, Mintun doubled to left field. She came home on a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs finished with 13 hits in the contest led by Winkler with two singles, a double and an RBI. Dasenbrock had two singles and Gray had a single, double and three RBIs.

Mintun had two of Neoga's four hits in the game.

"We played good defense, which has been solid from the start of the season," said Tipton. "We got everyone in to play today and got some good contributions off the bench."

The Bulldogs improve to 6-0 in the conference and are 10-2 overall. The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday hosting Mulberry Grove and Edwardsville Metro-East Lutheran. St. A will take on Mulberry Grove at 11 a.m. followed by Mulberry Grove against Metro-East Lutheran around 12:30 p.m. and St. Anthony taking on Metro-East Lutheran around 2 p.m.
