NORMAL — Megan Ochs of Newton advanced to the final round of the Class 2A Country Insurance Three-Point Showdown at the State Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday. The competition was held at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University.

Ochs, a 5-foot-6 senior, hit nine in the first round. She went into a shootoff where she connected on five and had to go into a second shootoff where she advanced with six.

The other three players advancing were Melissa Gardner of Clifton Central, Annie Borowiak of Nashville and Ashley Lynch of Lawrenceville. Gardner and Lynch are seniors, while Borowiak is a junior.

Borowiak and Lynch connected on 11 each. Gardner hit nine and had to advance to a shootoff where she again connected on nine. The final round is scheduled for approximately 8 p.m. today.

Several other area players competed. In Class 1A, Cowden-Herrick's Nicole Gardner, a 5-foot-4 senior, hit nine three-pointers in the opening round and advanced to a shootoff. She hit four in the shootoff and failed to advance.

Another Cowden-Herrick player, Janae Wolf connected on four and did not advance. Wolf is a 5-foot-9 senior.

Morgan Healy, a 5-foot-7 sophomore, of North Clay (Louisville) hit three trifectas.

Moving on to the final round today in the Class 1A contest were Bethany Dorrington of Princeville. The 5-foot-7 freshman hit nine and went to a shootoff where she connected on six. Hannah Knepp of Roanoke-Benson also hit nine in the opening round and advanced with six in the shootoff. Molly Marcum of LeRoy connected on 10 and Laura Johnson of Newark had the most hits with 12.

The final round is scheduled for approximately 12:15 p.m. today.

Effingham High School's Hillary Collins competed in the final round of the Class 3A Centralia Sectional, but failed to advance. Advancing were Lindsay Lenon (Marion), Kristy Frey (Highland), Maddy Pea (Salem) and Elaina Robinson (Carbondale).
