NEWTON — Newton High School won all three of its games without allowing a run to win its own Newton Softball Tournament Saturday, shutting out Sullivan 7-0, disposing of Effingham St. Anthony 4-0 and defeating Arcola 7-0.

Meanwhile, St. Anthony's first contest of the four-team tourney was a 5-4, eight-inning triumph over Arcola. Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh and final inning, Arcola pushed across a run to knot things up. St. Anthony answered, however, scoring two in the eighth and holding on to get the win.

Kayla McLeod singled twice and drove in two runs in the victory and Jessica Keller also drove in a run while singling and doubling. Hannah Esker pitched all eight innings for the Bulldogs, allowing four runs to score on eight hits.

The Bulldogs' second contest pitted them against host Newton, and the Eagles jumped out to an early lead and, behind a one-hitter from pitcher Rachel Brown, grabbed a 4-0 win. St. Anthony's lone hit was a Nikki Gray double.

Meanwhile, Allison Tharp had a pair of singles and an RBI for the winners. McKinzie Phillips also singled twice and Sierra Eubank had an RBI single.

St. Anthony then claimed second place with a 13-1 drubbing of Sullivan. The Bulldogs scored in all five innings of the contest, including five runs in both the fourth and fifth to seal the 10-run rule victory.

Michelle Schmitt singled and doubled twice to lead the way for St. Anthony, knocking in a pair of runs. McLeod again singled twice and also hit a solo home run to drive in a run, and Allison Murphy singled twice.

Jenny Brown got the win on the hill, allowing just three hits and a single run.

At Dieterich

St. Anthony traveled to Dieterich Friday afternoon and prevailed in non-conference action with a 4-1 defeat of the host Maroons.

The contest was scoreless after four innings, but the Bulldogs scored once in the fifth and again in the sixth to lead 2-0. Dieterich fought back with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but two more Bulldog scores in the seventh put it out of reach.

Gray and Schmitt each had run-scoring singles for St. Anthony, while Kristen Winkler and Esker combined for a three-hitter on the hill. Hayley Hartke, Laura Thoele and Jamie Brummer all had singles for Dieterich.

St. Anthony also won a junior varsity contest, 11-0.
