The North Clay Cardinals knew that there was a storm brewing and got a game in just in time. The Cardinals defeated the Sandoval Blackhawks 12-0 in five innings Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals poured in the runs right off the bat scoring five runs and batting all nine players in the lineup. Tyson Jones singled and Harmon Clifton doubled. Jones scored on a throwing error by the Blackhawks catcher. Briar Repking singled in Harmon and made it 2-0. Ethan Burkett was hit by the next pitch and Holden Clifton singled in Repking. Luke Fleener singled and scored Burkett to take a 4-0 lead. Holden scored on a sacrifice hit by Brady Ingram.
The Cardinals were aggressive throughout the game in every aspect. Head coach of the Cardinals John Frech knew that they needed to get the game in before the rain came.
"We were just trying to be aggressive, trying to get as many runs as we could," Frech said. "We knew the rain was coming and we knew it would be an issue. And we tried to get a lot of guys in today and mix it up a little bit."
Frech used 14 players in this game. The Cardinals extended their lead by two runs in the second inning with Jones and Harmon coming across the plate with Jones scoring on a fielding error by the Blackhawks center fielder and Harmon scoring on a wild pitch. the Cardinals led 7-0 after two innings. Frech changed pitchers after the second as Repking came in. Donnie Zimmerman went 2 innings and gave up only one hit and had four strike outs. Repking went two innings and had five strike outs and only one hit. Ethan Burkett closed out the fifth striking out the three batters he faced.
"Our pitching did a good job. We've been pitching well all year but we know that there is a lot more mountains to climb than what we've done so far," Frech said. "The wins we got are great but, we know there is a lot more ahead and a lot better teams out there."
The Cardinals were not done yet, they added five more runs to take the 12-0 lead and close out the game. The Cardinals are now undefeated with an 8-0 record.
"The kids work hard and its pretty easy to coach with these guys at Louisville they work hard everyday," Frech said. "The meat of our schedule is coming and we know it."
