NEWTON — Effingham High School moved into the championship game of the 27th Annual Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament and the Hearts did it in a big way.

EHS blasted Dieterich 74-24 Monday evening to advance to the title match which is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Newton High School.

Effingham shot 60 percent from the field with 25 of 42 and were 50 percent from the three point line in the win with four of eight.

The Hearts jumped out to a 17-8 opening quarter lead on the Maroons then had a 20-6 run in the second period to lead 37-14 at halftime. Mindy McCollum tallied three baskets in the opening period and connected on three more in the third period including a trifecta.

The Hearts continued their run with a 22-3 lead in the third period and outscored the Maroons 15-7 in the final quarter.

Two players hit double figures for the Hearts. McCollum, a 5-foot-9 senior, tallied 15 points as did Morgan Bushur, also a 5-foot-9 senior. Bushur scored 11 of her 15 points in the final quarter.

Kristin Kohnert, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, and Hannah Fish, a 5-foot-7 junior, scored nine points each. Fish and Bushur led in rebounds with four each. Sadie Pals had three assists.

The Hearts also finished with 93 percent from the free throw line connecting on 12 of 13.

Dieterich was led by Vanessa Fritscher with 15. The loss was the first of the season for the Maroons who drop to 3-1. Dieterich will now face either Newton or Flora for third place Saturday at 1 p.m.

Effingham improves to 2-0 and will play either Newton or Flora for the championship.
