NEWTON — Effingham Post 120's Senior American Legion team got off to a rough start and couldn't quite recover, dropping an 8-6 contest to Newton Wednesday evening.

Newton roughed up Post 120 starter Adam Schimmelpfenning, who pitched into the third but did not record an out in the frame. He allowed eight runs on six hits and two walks in his two-plus innings of work, although only four were earned and Effingham committed three errors in the nine-inning contest.

Spotting the hosts an early 8-1 lead, Effingham fought back for five runs in the seventh to pull within two while Kenny Koenig was shutting Newton down.

That was all Post 120 could muster, however.

Jesse Birch got the win for Newton, tossing the first 6 2/3 innings. He allowed four hits and four walks and all of Effingham's six runs, but that was good enough.

Schimmelpfenning took the loss, but Koenig was excellent in relief, allowing just four hits and no runs in six innings work. Not only that, but Koenig didn't walk a man and struck out seven.

Anthony Jansen singled and doubled for Post 120, knocking in a run. Alex Schimmelpfenning singled twice for an RBI as well, while both Lucas Stortzum and Brad Gouchenouer singled.

The loss drops Post 120 to 2-1 this season. Next up is a trip to Teutopolis tonight for a 7 p.m. nine-inning game.
