The Effingham Flaming Hearts used a big night from quarterback-wide receiver tandem of Landon Wolfe and Tristin Duncan to help defeat the Macomb Bombers 54-19.
The Hearts wasted no time getting on the board, marching down the field on their first possession, picking up three first downs along the way. The drive was capped off by a 54-yard touchdown pass from Wolfe to Duncan to go up 7-0.
With the Bombers looking to respond, the Flaming Hearts got a big third down stop on a sack from Joey Duncan to force a punt. Kendall Ballman returned the punt 64 yards all the way down to the Macomb 14-yard line.
Effingham was able to take advantage of the field position, scoring on a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kollin Waymoth to increase the lead to 14-0 still in the first quarter.
On the ensuing defensive drive, the Flaming Hearts helped out the bombers with a pass interference call, despite the ball being thrown out of bounds.
The Bombers made the Flaming Hearts pay with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Vaelen Lane to John Ogle to get on the board and cut the Effingham lead to one possession.
After the Flaming Hearts went three-and-out on the following offensive possession, the Bombers were able to find the endzone on a 28-yard pass to Evis Campbell. But the Bombers missed the extra point to still trail by one at 14-13.
The Effingham offense was able to get momentum back in its favor after Wolfe found Duncan for a 39-yard pass to set up the Flaming Hearts just 15 yards from the endzone.
After Logan Brown picked up a first down on a tough run, he was able to punch it in from two yards out to extend the lead to 21-13.
On the next defensive possession, Luke Spencer was able to pick-off the Bombers, but the Flaming Hearts were unable to capitalize, going three-and-out.
On the next defensive possession, the Flaming Hearts got a pair of big plays. The first came from Gage Franklin with a big tackle for a loss and Parker Wolfe came up with an interception with 5:28 remaining.
This time, the Flaming Hearts made the Bombers pay with an absolute bomb of a pass to Duncan for 60-yard touchdown pass to go up 28-13 with 4:21 left in the half.
The Effingham defense was able to get a stop and force a punt, giving the Flaming Hearts the ball with 37 seconds remaining in the half.
But that proved to be just enough time, as the Flaming Hearts were able to find Duncan for a pass down to the 6-yard line. On the next play, Wolfe found Duncan for his third touchdown catch of the half. The kick was no good, putting the Hearts up 34-19 going into halftime.
The Effingham defense forced a three-and-out to start the second half and a bad punt from the Bombers gave the Hearts the ball at the Macomb 42-yard line.
The Flaming Hearts made Macomb pay once again, this time with a 33-yard touchdown run from Ballman to increase the lead 40-19. The defense responded by forcing a turnover on downs.
On the first play following the turnover on downs, Wolfe found Duncan for a 71-yard touchdown catch for his fourth score of the day to put the Hearts up 47-19.
After forcing a three-and-out, the snap went over head of the Bombers punter, recovered by Gage Franklin and ran in from 14 yards out to extend the lead to 54-19.
That proved to be enough, as the Flaming Hearts were able to improve to 3-2 by winning by that same score.
