Cumberland came calling at Bulldog Field and blanked Effingham St. Anthony 5-0 in high school softball action Thursday.

The two teams were scoreless through three innings before Cumberland broke loose with two runs in the fourth then tacked on two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

The Pirates had nine hits in the game between eight players. Jill Vogt led with two singles.

Ashley Carr pitched a no-hitter for the Pirates. St. Anthony committed two errors.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis edged Vandalia 4-3 as Katrina Swingler pitched a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts.

The Wooden Shoes took a 1-0 lead in the second and tacked on a run in the third. Vandalia came back within 2-1 in the fourth but T-town tallied two more runs in the fifth. The Vandals fell short with two runs in the sixth.

Kristen Runde had a single, triple and an RBI for the Shoes. Nicole Runde also had a single, triple and an RBI. Maria Dust and Angie Fuesting had a double each. Dust had one RBI.

T-town improves to 2-1 and returns to action today hosting Casey-Westfield. Vandalia drops to 0-1.

The Wooden Shoes' junior varsity squad won 11-4 to improve to 2-0 and is back in action today at Olney.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo and Dieterich played to a 2-2 tie with the game ending tied in the eighth inning due to darkness.

St. Elmo took a 1-0 lead in the fourth and Dieterich tallied two in the sixth. St. Elmo tied in the bottom of the seventh.

Dieterich is now 1-1-1 on the season and isn't back in action until April 6 at Hutsonville.

At Newton

Newton jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and went on for a 7-1 victory over Stewardson-Strasburg.

The Eagles had six hits in the game led by Jeana Cummins with a triple. Megan Martin had three RBIs.

Kelsey Lewis picked up the pitching victory going three innings allowing no runs on no hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Rachel Brown came on in relief in the fourth allowing one run on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
