An Effingham resident, Marilyn Wirth, 66, retired as a bank teller after first raising her four children in the Chicago-area. Later, she and her late husband, Bob, retired to Lake Sara in 2004. He died in 2012. She now works part-time at an after-school program associated with the Sacred Heart Church, called the “Club House.”
Marilyn grew up as an only child to parents with average means. Enjoyed the Chicago suburbs of Evergreen Park Catholic education K-8 and Evergreen Park public high school. That's the same school the unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, attended for a bit as a youngster, but they never knew each other.
Married in 1972 and she raised her four boys in Chicago Ridge. Later to care for her parents failing health, they moved into a “related living” situation for five years in Palos Park. They cared for her parents until they died unexpectedly six weeks apart in 2003.
It was Bob who organized a fishing trip for fellow dads coaching their sons at Little League, before the season kicked off, at Lake Shelbyville in 1980s. Marilyn said they started coming down to Effingham on weekends after discovering Lake Sara in late 80s. They often stayed at Anthony Acres and the Lake Sara Campground before making the move here full-time in 2004.
She attends Sacred Heart Church. She has six grandchildren. She self-identifies with the Republican platform.
