Effingham fire and police officials are investigating a fire that destroyed a garage Monday and left one person injured.
The Effingham Fire Department was called to 215 E. St. Louis at 5:52 p.m. While en route, firefighters received numerous reports of an explosion in the building and a person lying on the ground outside the garage.
Upon arrival, a person was found lying on the ground on the east side of residence and being treated by Abbott Ambulance. That person was transported to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital.
The garage had heavy smoke and fire on the west side.
A residence at 307 N. Second Street to the south of the involved garage sustained damage to the siding from the heat of the structure fire.
Also responding to the scene were Teutopolis firefighters. The fire was contained and brought under control after 35 minutes.
The fire is being classified as suspicious and is being investigated by Effingham Police Department and the Effingham Fire Department.
