A Colorado Springs man was arrested after he allegedly set a Ford Explorer on fire in a field on the 1100 block of the Avenue of MidAmerica on Thursday afternoon.

Malik V. Murphy, 19, has been charged with criminal damage to property between $300 and $10,000.

The rear of the vehicle was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on scene and proceeded to burn forward as they brought the fire under control, according to authorities.

Murphy was the driver and sole occupant, and the vehicle was owned by his parents, Effingham Police Chief Jeff Fuesting said. Police are in contact with his parents, Fuesting added.

Officers are still investigating the reasons for the fire.

Murphy was still in custody on Friday. Bond has been set at $7,500 bond.
