Newcomers Mike Cunningham and Angie Kronewitter narrowly defeated another newcomer, Tara Higgs, for two seats on Effingham Park District Board of Commissioners, according to unofficial results. Kronewitter netted 1,182 votes; Cunningham, 1,176; and Higgs, 1,031.
Current board members Dennis Carie and Chris Huelsbusch did not seek re-election to the board. The seats are six-year terms. Huelsbusch has served one term, starting in 2013. Carrie, the current board president, has served since 2007.
Kronewitter said she raised her three children in the Effingham area using the park district facilities and participating in extracurricular activities. The 48-year-old works as a Family and Community Engagement Specialist for CEFS Head Start 0-5 Program.
When asked what three things she would like to accomplish if elected, she said encouraging and brainstorming ways to add to and improve existing park district activities; find a way to encourage more children to get out and play; and further spread the word about the Richard E. Workman Sports and Wellness Complex.
Mike Cunningham has been involved in Effingham Flame Softball league, where he is vice president, and as a member of the Effingham USBC Bowling Association. The 45-year-old father of four is a physical therapist assistant.
When asked what three things he would like to accomplish if elected, he said help the district to continue to provide quality programs; continue to update facilities; and investigate ways to increase revenue for the district through new programs or events.
