Although their efforts to move eighth-grade promotion were not met at the Stewardson-Strasburg school board meeting Thursday night, two Strasburg pastors are pleased promotion will be moved in future years.

The Rev. Michael Mohr of Grace Lutheran Church in Strasburg and the Rev. Steven Becker of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Strasburg presented reasons they believe eighth-grade promotion should be moved to a Friday night rather than a Thursday night.

Both Mohr and Becker made their presentations because the Ascension Day Service is held on the same night. The pastors said they had made their request to move promotion in March 2006. Board President Jerry Hanfland apologized for the oversight on their request.

In past years, according to Mohr and Becker, eighth-grade promotion fell on a Thursday night because high school graduation was on the following Friday, but for the past several years high school graduation has been moved to Sunday and they believe eighth-grade promotion should be moved to Friday.

They also said moving the promotion would be more convenient for students’ families. They said having it on a Thursday conflicts with the work week and makes it hard for extended family members to attend the promotion.

Although their efforts at Thursday’s meeting did not change this year’s schedule, the pastors did accomplish getting promotion moved to Friday nights in the future.

“We can make a policy to change promotion to Fridays in the future; it’s too late for this year though,” Hanfland said.

In other business, the board:

• Approved Illinois High School Association and Illinois Elementary School Association memberships for the 2007-08 school year.

• Approved ordering new high school volleyball uniforms. The amount will not exceed $1,200.

• Congratulated sixth-grade DARE graduates.
