Arrest made in suspicious garage fire

A Casey man was arrested in connection to a suspicious fire that destroyed a garage in Effingham Monday.

Kenny L. Cathey, 26, is charged with residential arson, a Class 1 felony. Cathey's bond has been set at $75,000 with conditions that he have no contact with the victim and he cannot be at the residence. He was arrested Monday and is currently in custody at Effingham County Jail.

Effingham Fire Department was called to 215 E. St. Louis at 5:52 p.m. on Monday and en route received numerous reports of an explosion in the building and a person lying on the ground outside the garage.

Effingham Police Chief Jason McFarland confirmed Cathey was the individual found lying on the ground outside the garage when authorities arrived. He was treated at the scene by Abbott Ambulance and then taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital. After he was released from the hospital, he was transported to the county jail.

Cathey has been appointed public defender Scott Schmidt. His next court appearance is June 18.
