Howard and Laura Janis have scheduled a work day at Arborcrest Memorial Park on U.S. Route 40 west of Funkhouser. The day is to install over 240 American flags on the graves of veterans buried there to honor them on Memorial Day.
This is a tradition that was started years ago by the late Joyce Miller.
The day will start at 1 p.m. The rain date will be Sunday, May 21, at the same time. Those wishing to help are encouraged to bring a trimmer or blower.
Sunday, May 21
1 p.m. — Memorial Day service at Loy Cemetery. The service will include Theodore Hoffman VFW Post 1769 and Auxiliary, Effingham; American Legion Post 120 and Auxiliary, Effingham; American Legion Post 924 and Auxiliary, Teutopolis and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7 and Auxiliary, Effingham.
Thursday, May 25
4 p.m. — Wilbur Braughton Post 611 of Stewardson will place flags on the graves of veterans in the Stewardson, Mound, Spain, Rincker and Wolf Creek cemeteries.
Saturday, May 27
8:30 a.m. — Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at the Watson Cemetery in conjunction with the 33rd Annual Watson Homecoming celebration. Pastor Jamie Miller of the Watson Baptist Church will be officiating. American Legion Post 120 and Auxiliary, Effingham; Theodore Hoffman VFW Post 1769 and Auxiliary, Effingham; Teutopolis American Legion Post 924; Grobengieser-Fischer American Legion Post 512, Altamont; Gieseking-Schwerdtfeger VFW Post 7676, Altamont; and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7, Effingham, will be participating in the ceremony.
Sunday, May 28
11:45 a.m. — Farina American Legion Post 411 and Auxiliary will hold a Memorial Day ceremony in the Mini Park at the intersection of Madison and Chestnut (Route 37) Streets in Farina.
9 a.m. — Memorial Day services at St. Francis Cemetery. Participating will be Theodore Hoffman VFW Post 1769 and Auxiliary, Effingham; American Legion Post 924 and Auxiliary, Teutopolis; American Legion Post 120 and Auxiliary, Effingham and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7 and Auxiliary, Effingham.
5 to 9 p.m. — Sigel Cemetery Visit. Sigel history through songs, skits, stories, trivia and tributes. Park at St. Michael School and board a flatbed trailer for a hayride to Sigel Cemetery. Trailers depart from the school every 20 minutes. Event will be held in the gym if there is inclement weather.
Monday, May 29
9 a.m. — Theodore Hoffman VFW Post 1769 and Auxiliary will host Memorial Day services at St. Anthony Cemetery American Legion Post 120 and Auxiliary, Effingham and Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 7 and Auxiliary, Effingham. VFW Post 1769 will lay a wreath in remembrance of Theodore Hoffman.
10:30 a.m. — Theodore Hoffman VFW Post 1769 and Auxiliary will host a Memorial Service at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Effingham. Gary Buehnerkemper will serve as Master of Ceremonies, The Invocation and Benediction will be given by Pastor David McConnell of the First Christian Church in Effingham, Patrick and Julie Zuber will be singing the National Anthem and Bob and Charlie McWhorter of VFW Post 1769 will present the colors.
Wreath presentations by DAV Chapter 7 and Auxiliary, Effingham American Legion Post 120 and Auxiliary, Theodore Hoffman VFW Post 1769 and Auxiliary, Amvets Post 40, Effingham County Marine Corps League, Teutopolis American Legion Post 924 and Auxiliary, 40 et 8 Voiture 1439. Effingham Elks Club 1016 will hold a large American Flag.
Guest speaker will be U.S. Army Specialist Stephanie Zinser who served in Iraq in 2005 and 2006. Rifle Salute will be by Theodore Hoffman VFW Post 1769 firing squad under the supervision of Bill Copple Sergeant-at-Arms and "taps" will be performed by Alex Jeffries. Music will be provided by the church group On High.
An additional ceremony will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery immediately following. A meal will be served following the two ceremonies at the Theodore Hoffman VFW Post 1769
3 p.m. — Three Chicks and a Stage will honor local veterans with the stage production "Here to Serve." They will be honoring the men and women who serve in the organizations that support veterans in their time of need. FACE Orchestra will be performing live. The program will be held at the Effingham Performance Center. Adults, $14, Veterans and children under 12 years old, $8.
Gieseking-Schwerdtfeger VFW Post 7676, Altamont, and Grobengieser-Fischer American Legion Post 512, Altamont, will host the following events.
10 a.m. — The 2017 Memorial Day Parade starts at the Altamont High School, proceeds down East Division Street, then onto North Main Street to Union Cemetery. Gerhardt (Pete) Braasch will be Grand Marshal for the parade.
11 a.m. — Memorial Day program at Union Cemetery. Master of Ceremonies will be VFW Post 7676 Post Commander Will Dammerman and guest speaker will be John Schimmelpfenning. Music provided by the Altamont Community High School Chorus vocalist Marli Fearday.
Food will be served at the Gieseking-Schwerdtfeger VFW Post 7676 after the Memorial Day ceremony for a freewill donation.
1:30 p.m. — American Legion Post 420 will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony at the St. Elmo Area Veterans Memorial Wall along the south side of U.S. Route 40 in St. Elmo. Special guest speaker will be Linda Hanabarger, president of the Fayette County Genealogical and Historical Society.
The St. Elmo Boy Scout troop will provide drinking water and honor wreathes will be placed for new names added to the Veterans Memorial.
Presentation of the Flag will be made by the St. Elmo Class of 2023 Honor Students. The ceremony will feature music from the St. Elmo High School Band and musical group Backroom Spirits. “Taps” will be performed by Sydney Rosborough.
11 a.m. — Brownstown VFW Post 9770 will hold Memorial Day service at the Veterans Wall in Brownstown. Master of Ceremonies will be VFW Post 9770 member Carl Rhodes. Brownstown Community Choir will provide music and Linda Hanabarger, president of the Fayette County Genealogical and Historical Society will be keynote speaker. In case of rain, services will be held at the Methodist Church.
10 a.m. — Keeler-Adams American Legion Post 1168 will hold a Memorial Day service at the Edgewood Cemetery, weather permitting. The Rev. Ed Wojnar will give the invocation and benediction. Guest speaker is John Monnet, former Effingahm County Sheriff. “Taps” will be played by Glenn Lewis. A meal will be served following the ceremony at the Keeler-Adams American Legion Post 1168 home.
1 p.m. — Wilbur Broughton American Legion Post 611, Stewardson, will have Memorial Day services at Stewardson Cemetery. The ceremony will honor all deceased veterans from all wars. Keynote speaker is Pastor David Weaver from Trinity Lutheran Church of Stewardson.
10 a.m. — American Legion Post 628, Dieterich, will have a Memorial Day ceremony at the Dieterich Veterans Memorial in Liberty Park.
Cumberland County VFW Post 4598, Greenup, Nichols-Goleman-Boggs American Legion Post 566, Greenup and Wiley-Mumford American Legion Post 764, Toledo will host three Memorial Day ceremonies together at the following locations:
9 a.m. — Memorial Day program at Jewett Cemetery.
10 a.m. — Memorial Day ceremony at Greenup Cemetery.
11 a.m. — Memorial Day ceremony in Toledo at the Veterans Memorial by the Life Center.
American Legion Post 14, Post Commander and Adjutant Steve Welty Sr. and VFW Post 3999 Post Commander Billy Lagle will hold a joint Memorial Day service in Flora.
10 a.m. — Memorial Day Parade begins at the Flora train depot and proceeds to the Elmwood Cemetery, 338 South State Street, for a Memorial Day service. Steve Welty Sr. will be Master of Ceremonies, a wreath presentation will be made by American Legion Post 14 Auxiliary president, VFW Post 3999 Auxiliary president and the Daughters of the American Revolution and Memorial Day address by Delmar Buske, Past Fourth Division Illinois American Legion Commander and retired Illinois State Police trooper from Litchfield. Buske's wife, Luella Buske, is president of the American Legion Auxiliary for the state of Illinois.
