Traveling Help Desk

An aide to Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) will be available in Effingham County next week to assist area constituents with any problems they may be having with federal government agencies.

On Wednesday, June 19, the staff member will be at the Altamont Municipal Building (202 North 2nd Street) from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Constituents who need assistance with a federal issue but are not available at either time period can call the congressman's Effingham office at 217)-347-7947.

Charity cookout

Effingham Area Home Builders Association will host a Community Charitable Summer Cookout Friday, June 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fast Stop General Store parking lot, 410 S. Willow St., Effingham.

The menu will include ribeye sandwiches, hamburgers, pork burgers, chips, cookies and drink.

Drive-thru, carryout, dine in and pre-orders will be available.

Proceeds benefit Effingham County Habitat for Humanity.

Day of Prayer for Life

The 45th Annual Day of Prayer for Life will be Wednesday, June 26, at St Francis Church, 203 E Main St., Teutopolis. All are welcome to come and pray.

The Day of Prayer will begin with Mass at 8 a.m., followed by Eucharistic Exposition and Prayer by area churches and organizations throughout the day. Benediction will be held at 7 p.m. with the closing Mass at 7:30 p.m. Guest celebrant for the 7:30 p.m. closing Mass will be Father Dean Probst, Dean of the Effingham Deanery, and pastor of St. Thomas, Newton and St. Mary’s, Ste. Marie. A reception with refreshments will follow in St Clare Hall, adjoining the church.

10-11 a.m. — St. Anthony, Effingham; St. Mary's, Shumway; CDA 720 of Effingham

Noon-1 p.m. — Silent hour, all volunteers; all faiths welcome

1-2 p.m. — St. Clare, Altamont; St. Ann Edgewood; St. Mary, St. Elmo; St. Thomas, Newton; St. Mary’s, St. Marie; Secular Franciscans

2-3 p.m. — St. Michael, Sigel; St. Mary's, Neoga
