A black bear weighing 225 to 250 pounds was shot to death by Valdosta, Ga., police when it climbed down from a tree in the city.

Authorities aren't sure why a big and wild black bear camped out in a tree in this south Georgia city of 55,000.

But when it decided to climb down two nights ago, police didn't hesitate to shoot it dead and not wait for the game warden to arrive.

David Allen, a spokesman for the state Department of Natural Resources, said the officers responded to a frightened citizen's 911 call and had no choice.

"They did what was best for the public," said Allen.

He estimated the bear weighed between 225 and 250 pounds.

The black bear population has been rising in Georgia in recent years, though they are more common to the mountain habitat in the northern part of the state.
