Effingham native killed in Fort Hood shooting

EFFINGHAM — Effingham native Timothy Owens was one of three killed at the Fort Hood shootings Wednesday in Texas.

Owens, 37, was stationed at Fort Hood and working as a counselor at the time of the shooting, according to Owens' cousin Glen Welton.

"He saw a need to help people," Welton said. "That was part of his calling."

Owens grew up in Effingham before moving to Rolla, Mo., where he met his wife, Billy. As a young man, Owens had worked and lived with his cousin Betty Goodwin.

"I can tell you that he was a very competitive young man," she said. "He would do anything for you. He had a very crazy sense of humor. You'd be able to see that from his smile."
