Effingham's Wilson headed to state tourney

Effingham Daily News

---- — Effingham's Morgan Wilson played her best golf of the season, a round of 85, to advance as an individual to the Class A State tournament this weekend.

While her team didn't advance from Monday's Sectionals, Effingham head coach Jerry Trigg said his team played some of its best golf of the season, especially Wilson.

“She really worked hard for this,” Trigg said. “She kept plugging away and really played well today.”

The first shot of Wilson's round went in the water, and she finished the first hold with an eight, but battled back to finish sixth place among advancing individuals at the tournament.

Wilson topped her Regionals round of 88 from last week with her best score of the season on Monday.

Trigg said Effingham Country Club played tough on Monday, which resulted in a lot of high scores during the event. After Wilson, Alex Brummer finished with a round of 93.

Also, Hope Collier finished with a 111, Kaylee Tonn finished with a 116 and Madison Weis finished with a 133 to round out Effingham's performance, finishing 10th among 12 teams.

St. Anthony and Teutopolis both had individuals trying to advance to State. Mariah Bushue's 90 was the best individual score between the two schools, but she didn't advance to State to represent St. Anthony. Teutopolis' Casey Willenborg shot a 103 to lead the Wooden Shoes' three individual representatives.

St. Anthony's Madison Bushue shot a 97, which was second from the Bulldogs, while teammate Abby Brown shot a 113 and Kelsea Dust shot a 127.

The Wooden Shoes had three representatives, including Willenborg, at the Sectionals in Effingham. Behind Willenborg, Ellie Ruholl and Haley Giles finished within two strokes of each other – Ruholl shooting a 112 and Giles a 114.

Neither Teutopolis coach Andy Fehrenbacher nor St. Anthony coach Ben Scherzer were available for comment.

Nashville finished in first place, led by Shawn Rennergarbe's 71. Her score was the top score at the event, while Eldorado's Taylor Goodley finished two strokes behind her and her team placed third.

Metropolis Massac County finished second as a team, advancing to State along with Nashville and Eldorado.
