---- — DIETERICH — Both head coaches said they felt their teams were more closely matched than a two-set victory would show, as evidence of the back-and-forth second set that pushed Dieterich to the win.

Dieterich took five-point leads three times in the second set and one four-point lead, but each time Cumberland battled back in the game, taking the lead or tying Dieterich after each deficit.

Despite Cumberland's efforts, Dieterich won 25-23 to cap off a two-set sweep Monday night having already won the first set 25-15.

“I think we were evenly matched talent wise,” Dieterich head coach Tamara Boerngen said. “We just kept the momentum up on our side. Once you lose the momentum, it's hard to get it back.”

Cumberland head coach Sara Foley said her team “let down” during the 10-point loss in the first set, but was more into the game in the last set.

After the loss in the first set, Cumberland fell behind, 8-3, but fought back to take a 10-9 lead. Then, Dieterich burst out to a 16-11 lead.

“We just have to keep playing intense and go for everything,” Foley said. “It'll make or break you.”

Cumberland came back to tie the game 16-16 and took the lead five points later, 19-18. Dieterich came out of time out and improved its play to take a 23-19 lead.

“I just told my team they had to find their weak spots and holes and utilize that advantage to get the points,” Boerngen said.

With another rally, Cumberland tied the game 23-23 and it was up in the air which team would win the set, but Foley said she thought her team would be playing in a third set.

Keeping to the set's trend, Dieterich won the next couple points after the Cumberland push and the Movin' Maroons won the set and game.

“If we would've pushed every point, like you push when you're behind, we would've won that game,” Foley said. “I thought we'd go three games, but we didn't.”

Mindy Bohnhoff's 19 assists and Mickayla Winters' 10 kills led Dieterich, who moved to 4-11 this season and will host Teutopolis today at 5:15 p.m. Cumberland goes on the road again today, heading to Flora for an LIC contest.
