Altamont takes second at own invitational Busy tournament weekend across area

---- — ALTAMONT — Altamont was mere points away from winning its second tournament of the year and hosting its own Altamont Invitational tournament trophy Saturday.

After sweeping pool play, the Indians won the first set of the championship game against Greenville 25-18 and were neck and neck in the second set. It wasn't to be, as Greenville held off the Indians 26-24 in the second set and won the third 15-11 to win the Altamont Invitational. Altamont advanced to the championship by besting Beecher City 25-14, downing Vandalia 25-13, 25-19 and taking out Lincolnwood 25-20, 25-17. In Pool B, Greenville swept through its competition, besting Cumberland and Nokomis in straight sets and downing South Central 25-17, 25-18. The Cougars advanced to the third-place game and lost a tight one to Vandalia, taking fourth place with a 27-25, 25-23 loss. Beecher City lost to Lincolnwood 25-22, 25-20 and Vandalia 25-13, 25-17 but won its consolation matchip 25-22, 23-25, 15-12. Beecher City hosts Stew-Stras Tuesday night, Altamont heads to Stew-Stras Thursday night and South Central heads to Clay City Thursday night.

Indians, SEB play at MattoonIn a battle of area teams, Neoga took sixth place at Mattoon's tournament, downing St. Elmo/Brownstown for sixth 25-18, 25-23Neoga went 2-3 on the day, beating Sullivan 25-21, 25-21 and the Eagles for sixth place. They lost to Taylorville 25-20, 25-23, fell to Pana 25-21, 24-26, 15-14 and were topped by Warrensburg 26-24, 25-23. The Eagles won their opener against Sullivan 25-22, 15-25, 15-12, but ran into some bad luck from there. Warrensburg beat the Eagles 25-11, 25-18, Taylorville defeated St. Elmo/Brownstown 25-24, 25-22 and Pana took them down 25-15, 25-16. St. Elmo/Brownstown's Gabi Moore was named to the all-tournament team.1Neoga hosts St. Anthony Tuesday night and St. Elmo/Brownstown hosts Cowden-Herrick.
