Shoes bested by St. Thomas More 203-218

The Teutopolis Lady Shoes took to Cardinal Golf Course Monday afternoon against Champaign St. Thomas More and held their own against a perennial state power.

St. Thomas More took down the Shoes 203-218 Monday as the two teams dueled on the back nine, but coach Andy Fehrenbacher said Teutopolis performed well in its season opener against the Sabers.

"It was a good way to start out the year against a perennially strong team," Fehrenbacher said.

St. Thomas More's Caroline Dodd took home the medal, carding a 47 in the first pairing against Teutopolis' Casey Willenborg.

Willenborg returned to action after missing last season, and led the Shoes on the day with a 51 over the nine holes.

Fehrenbacher said it was good to see the junior back in action after a lost sophomore campaign.

"I did expect her to shoot the low score for us," he said. "(But) by being out a season, there's something to be said about getting back into a competitve match like she did."

Haley Giles and Ellie Ruholl, two of the Shoes' returning scorers from last year, were right at the heels of Willenborg, each carding a 52. The two are the only players who were consistent scorers for the Lady Shoes during a 2012 campaign that saw the Shoes advance to sectionals.

Taylor During shot a 49, Emily Roth finished with a 53 and Sami Floyd scored a 54 on the day to finish out St. Thomas More's 203.

Katie Thoele shot a 62 to round out the Shoes' scorecard, making the jump into the top four after spending last year golfing in the exhibition rounds. Teutopolis was missing its fifth golfer, Lea Thoele, so each team only scored its top four golfers on the day.

Teutopolis lost by 15, but Fehrenbacher saw the promise in his team's debut effort, due in large part to its balanced effort.
