MT. VERNON —
The Rams took advantage of several Effingham errors to break open a close game Monday.
Mt. Vernon claimed a 10-1 win on a soggy night at Brennan Klein Memorial Field.
“We just made some big defensive mistakes and obviously we didn’t put very many runs on the board,” said Effingham coach Chris Fleener. “So if you’re going to make those mistakes, you’re going to have to score a lot of runs.”
The Rams closed the game with nine runs in the final three innings.
“I thought we did a good job today after a big win (Monday at Benton) of coming back and playing with good enthusiasm and focus,” Mt. Vernon coach Tim Holloway said.
Mt. Vernon started the game quickly with a run in the opening inning on an overcast and rainy evening.
“The rain comes, and you definitely want to get that lead early and maintain and try to add on,” Holloway said. “The game may not last.”
Mt. Vernon clung to a 1-0 edge until the fourth inning. The Rams tacked on four more runs. Several Effingham miscues aided the Rams. Tyler Morgan started the scoring with an RBI single after Jake Pike dropped down a bunt to reach as the leadoff hitter. The Rams pushed two more runs home after blown pickoff moves from the Hearts. Zach Brookman ended surge with an RBI single to center field to give the Rams a 5-0 cushion.
The Rams added more runs in the sixth. Already up 6-1, Mt. Vernon tallied four more scores. Two of the runs scored on Effingham errors. The Hearts finished the game with nine miscues in the field.
Effingham’s only run of the game came in the top of the fifth. Adam Koester opened the inning with a double and moved to third after Mt. Vernon pitcher Aaren Morgan balked. Koester came in to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lane Koenig.
Morgan started the game on the mound for the Rams and pitched five innings. He finished with seven strikeouts and a walk. Brock Fulkerson pitched the final two innings for Mt. Vernon.
Effingham finished with three hits in the game after the Rams hurlers.
“There’s just a lot we have to work on,” Fleener said. “We had too many strikeouts. (Morgan) did a good job. He just threw strikes, and I felt like he did his job.”
Mt. Vernon is 4-4-1 this season and hosts Lombard Montini today.
Effingham is now 3-3 on the season and gets right back at it today, traveling to Shelbyville.
