While Avery Braunecker wasn't the fastest swimmer in the state Saturday, she certainly was close.
The Effingham sophomore competed for two state titles Saturday at the Illinois state swim championships, and came through with a second-place finish and a third-place finish as well.
Braunecker competed in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, taking second and third, respectively.
Her time of 23.16 seconds in the 50 was just 0.28 seconds behind state champion Mimi Schneider (Oak Park Fenwick) and her time of 22.87.
The 100-yard freestyle was won by North Downers Grove's Gabby Sims in 50.12 seconds, with Mudelein's Erin Falconer taking second in 50.29 and Braunecker in third with a time of 51.15.
In Friday's preliminaries, Braunecker swam the 50 in a time of 23.47 and qualified in fourth, setting herself up to cut 0.31 seconds off her time Saturday. Schneider also won the preliminary.
Braunecker swam a 51.42 in the 100, finishing third in prelims while cutting 0.27 seconds off on Saturday. Sims came in second Friday with Falconer winning the preliminary.
