EFFINGHAM — Shawn Meyer struck out 10 in a complete game, and top-seeded South Central broke the game open in the late innings and posted an 11-3 victory over Dieterich on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the National Trail Conference baseball tournament.
The Cougars (15-4-1) will face fifth-seeded Neoga today in one semifinal. In the other, second-seeded St. Anthony will take on No. 3 Stew-Stras.
Today’s winners meet at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Elmo in the championship game.
South Central took a 1-0 lead in the first, and extended it to 3-0 when Noah Powless hit a two-run homer in the third.
The Cougars made it 6-0 in the fifth, then answered the Maroons’ three-run rally in the top of the sixth by scoring five times in the bottom of the frame.
Powless finished 2 for 2 with four RBIs. Austin Schwarm was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and his two-run double was the key hit in the five-run sixth.
Drake Ritter was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Daniel Diss was 2 for 4.
Garrett Einhorn and Alex Bohnhoff were 2 for 3 for the Maroons, and Brandon Westjohn and Chris Lidy had one hit. Westjohn and Einhorn had RBIs.
Westjohn was the losing pitcher, allowing 11 earned runs in six innings.

Jenny Bullock notched five aces, 10 kills and eight digs in a 25-12, 17-25, 27-25 victory over Cowden-Herrick on Tuesday.
Lindsay Floyd added a kill, 18 asists, five aces and two digs for the Blue Devils, and Dani Bell added three aces and 15 digs.
The Windsor JV team lost to Cowden-Herrick.
St. Elmo downs Altamont
The Eagles defeated Altamont in straight sets on Tuesday night, 25-17, 25-16.
Savannah Feezel had 10 kills and Perry Manley notched 13 assists in the win.
St. Elmo improved to 17-6 overall and 7-2 in the National Trail Conference.
The JV Eagles also topped Altamont, 25-20, 25-22.
North Clay beats Wayne City
Behind 12 digs, five kills and three aces from Tia Rinehart, the Cardinals took down Wayne City on Tuesday in three sets, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21.
Courtney Crull had a block, five digs, a kill, three aces and 35 assists, Molly Rinehart added nine digs and nine kills, and Rachel Smith had five blocks, two digs, 14 kills and six aces.
The JV Cardinals also defeated Wayne City, 25-21, 25-21.
