---- — Runs were at a premium Wednesday in the City Series baseball doubleheader, and as a result, the series has yet to find a winner. Effingham and St. Anthony split the doubleheader, with the Bulldogs winning game one 2-1 and Effingham keeping their chances alive with a 4-1 win in game two. Now, the series concludes today -- weather permitting. The forecast is not looking cooperative, as the teams played a doubleheader Wednesday in preparation for a rainout Thursday.Zach Gardewine threw six innings and got the win in game one, thanks to a key two-run home run by Austin Bushur in the third inning. Effingham had led 1-0 after the first inning, when Drew Levitt doubled and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. Bushur's homer put St. Anthony on top, allowing Gardewine, and briefly Ben Hecht, to take care of business on the mound. "We get three runs (total) and we get a win, I'll take that," said St. Anthony coach Kenny Miller. Things stayed mostly quiet until the sixth, when St. Anthony had runners on the corner with two outs. Eli Dasenbrock took off to steal second, and got caught in a rundown. Neil Williams took off from third, but first baseman Kevin Daugherty fired him out to keep the score 2-1.St. Anthony brought in Hecht for the sixth against the middle of the order. Levitt led off with a single, and got to third after a wild pitch, a balk and a Carter Hayes walk. With runners on second and third and one out, Matt Steffen tried a suicide squeeze and couldn't get it down, hanging Levitt up between third and home for the out."I was hoping Ben would hit our bat on that one," said Effingham coach Chris Fleener. "He threw it high and outside, and (Steffen), it was going to be tough for him to reach it. We lost on that gamble."Gardewine came back in for the seventh and closed the door on the win. Devin Mayfield took the loss despite allowing just seven hits. Game two started out slow as well, and St. Anthony broke through first in the third inning. Bushur walked with two outs, stole second and advanced to third on an overthrow. Jacob Schuette promptly knocked him in with a single up the middle. St. Anthony held the lead until the fifth inning, when things started to unravel with an Austin Webb leadoff walk. Braydon Bone had a bunt single, and both runners advanced on a Dasenbrock throwing error. Carter Hayes tied the game with a one-out single, and Drew Levitt doubled in a run on the next at-bat to put Effingham up 2-1. They'd extend the lead on two straight wild pitches from Alex Hoelscher that allowed Adam Koester and Levitt to score and make it 4-1. "Drew Levitt had a big hit, that hit's huge. At that point, it breaks it open," Miller said. "We could have been down 2-1, and we were down 4-1. That's a huge difference. We lost focus." That'd be all she wrote, as Daugherty continued pitching well on the mound, tossing a complete game to knot the City Series at 1-1."I was proud of our pitchers for hanging in there and sticking it out," Fleener said. "Devin and Kevin, they did great jobs."In game one, Bushur was the only Bulldog with an RBI, going 1-for-3 with a two-run homer. Hecht was 1-for-3 with a double and a run. Drew Levitt was 2-for-3 with a double for Effingham, while Alex Carie and Daugherty were each 1-for-3.Schuette was 2-for-3 with St. Anthony's only RBI in game two. Bone was 2-for-4, Hayes was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Levitt was 1-for-3 with an RBI double.Hecht will pitch game three, whether it be today, Friday or another day. Fleener said he is deciding between Levitt and Preston Walker. That game is tentatively scheduled for today, weather permitting.
