The final pair of runs were tacked on in the fifth. Mayfield was walked to start the inning, and reached home three batters later on a wild pitch. Dirk's sacrifice fly launched to center field gave Post 120 a commanding 8-1 lead.
But Post 924 still had some fight left. Bloemer capped off his solid day with a triple to lead off the seventh, before Jansen brought him home off a sacrifice ground ball.
"These kids aren't going to give up at-bats," Niemerg said. "They're out here to take some swings, work on a few things. They're not going to give up."
Austin Hartke (Teutopolis) got the start for Post 924, allowing five earned runs off six hits in two innings of work. Jacob Roepke (Teutopolis), one of the four called up from Junior Legion action, came in and did a steady job in relief. Roepke gave up three runs off six hits and two walks through five innings.
"He threw a solid five innings," Niemerg said. "Gave up three in five innings, that's all I can ask."
Post 120's big win in Game 1 pushed its mark back to 4-4 on the season, while Post 924 fell to 5-2.
Game 2's score was not available as of press time.
