Hinterscher becomes 10th Dieterich player to score 1,000 points

DIETERICH — When asked about the basket that led to his 1,000th career point, Dieterich's Dalton Hinterscher didn't bring up the shot first.

He brought up the effort put forth by his teammates.

"I got it off a fast break when two games came and set a double screen for me and I hit a deep three," Hinterscher said.

To his coach, Jeff Staser, that's just the way Hinterscher is.

"He would be the first to tell you that his teammates have put in him a position in his sophomore, junior and this year to get where he's at," Staser said.

Hinterscher hit the milestone earlier this month against Neoga, and in doing so became the 10th player in Movin' Maroons history to reach 1,000 career points.

Since then, he has already moved up to ninth on the career scoring list at Dieterich, as of last Friday.

He scored 40 points for the Maroons against St. Anthony in a win last Friday night.

In terms of school history, he has a counterpart on the girls' team. Candace Niemerg recently hit the 1,000 rebound mark for her career.

Hinterscher led the team in scoring for both his sophomore and junior seasons, and is one of just three seniors on Dietrich's team this year. He averaged 16.8 points per game last season, hit 80 percent of his free throws and 41 percent of his three-pointers.

Coming into the season, it was most probably a question of when he would hit the mark as opposed to if, giving Hinterscher time to think about the accomplishment.

But it was never his primary focus.

"Yeah, it's on your mind, because you have people telling you about it all the time. I wasn't worried about it, it's definitely not my number one priority," he said. "Winning, helping my team play the best basketball is my number one priority."

The Movin' Maroons came off a 22-7 season last year, but lost three players to graduation and had to replace more than 1,200 points from last year's squad.

It's been a bit of an adjustment, but Dieterich entered Wednesday 7-4 to start the year and 3-1 in the NTC.

Staser said Hinterscher was out to up his game this season, and while this is Staser's first year as head coach, he has been working with Hinterscher as an assistant for since his sophomore season as an assistant.

"He's very humble; he deserves everything he gets," Staser said. "If every kid came like that, we wouldn't have a problem."

The senior also works hard off the court, Staser said.

"He does a lot of good things for the community," he said. "He's mentoring a kid here through the school, a grade school kid. He spends a lot of time you don't see your average high school kid take."

Hinterscher will keep climbing the list as the season goes on, which he said is an honor.

But it still is about the team first. "It's definitely an honor because we've had some pretty great players come through here," he said. "I'm not satisfied yet, I won't be until the end of the year."

What was the goal then? Hinterscher only had one word.

"Regionals," he said.

  • czachorskimug.jpg Czachorski: Extra innings intrigue unmatched

Obscenely long baseball games are my kryptonite. Once I get sucked in, it’s impossible for me to stop watching until it’s over. It doesn’t matter if it’s the Cubs, the Cardinals, the Astros or the Mariners — if it’s on TV and it’s going into the twelfth inning or later, you can bet I’m finding a way to tune in.

Newton Post 120 didn’t let a 4-1 deficit get to them against Highland Post 439, using a patient approach in the face of an elimination game.
Three bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the third tied the game at 4-4, and with the bases loaded down 5-4 in the fourth, Tim Weber broke the game open with a two-run double and an error.
By the time the dust settled, Newton led 10-5 heading to the sixth inning and would hold on to a 10-7 win to keep its season alive.

  • Bierman.jpg Newton Post 20 falls short against Breese Gray 9-3

While the District 23 title ultimately exceeded Newton Post 20’s grasp, their season will continue in Bethalto.
Newton took on Breese Post 252 Gray for the Junior Legion District 23 title as the two division winners, but Breese’s bats proved too much for Newton in an 9-3 loss for Post 20.
“The innings where they put some runs on us, we gave them some extra outs,” said Newton coach John Grunloh. “You’ve got to make the plays when you play better teams.”
