---- — St. Anthony and Effingham dueled each other at Mid-America Corvette Thursday afternoon, but Effingham downed St. Anthony in both the boys' and girls' meets.
The Flaming Heart boys totaled 22 points on the day compared to the Bulldogs' 38 points, and the Lady Hearts' 24 points bested the Lady Bulldogs' 35 points.
The Bulldogs got to a good start on the boys' end, with Andrew Gardewine's 17:34.8 taking first place by nearly 80 seconds. But the Flaming Hearts won thanks to their volume of good finishes, claiming second through fourth and sixth through eight.
Jacob Donaldson took second in 18:52.5, Josh McCammon finished third in 19:28.2 and Leighton Lark earned fourth in 19:48.0. Mitchell Sager took fifth for St. Anthony in 19:54.3, but Effingham rebounded from there. Gary Dameron came in sixth in 20:00.02, Patrick Siner came in seventh in 20:41 and Kennan Mahaffey finished eighth in 20:50, a non-scoring effort.
St. Anthony's Matt Gibson finished ninth in 20:59. Drake McHugh was 12th and credited with 11th in 21:48.7, and Jay Neibrugge's 25:11.65 was good for 12th after being the 17th man over the finish line.
Things were more balanced on the girls' side, but the Effingham depth earned them a win. Jenna Bingham won the race in 21:00.3 for the Lady Hearts, with the Hearts and Bulldogs trading spots for the first seven runners. St. Anthony's Carson Fonner came in second in 21:11.13, followed by Effingham's Shana Phillips in 22:32.14 for third and St. Anthony's Elizabeth Falconburg in 23:00.12 for fourth.
Haley Fatheree earned fifth for Effingham in 23:37.38, and St. Anthony's Rachel Wortman finished in 24:16.27 for sixth.
The next six runners across the line were Lady Hearts, with Madi Woelfer's 24:21.04 earning seventh and Jami Swan's 24:49.66 coming in in eighth.
Allison Spraul's 34:10.80 was 11th after she finished 13th, and Lea Zwettler's 35:20.95 was good for 12th after she came in as the 14th runner to round out St. Anthony's scorecard.
Anna Sophia Keller did not run for St. Anthony, and she has won the two races she has particpated in this season.
Effingham participates in the First to the Finish Invitational in Peoria, and St. Anthony will run at the Shelbyville Invitational Saturday at 10 a.m.
