Late inning comeback not enough for Post 120

Vandalia downs Effingham 6-4 in nine innings

Effingham Daily News

---- — A valiant seventh inning comeback extended Effingham Post 120's Junior Legion game against Vandalia Monday, but Vandalia prevailed with a 6-4 win in nine innings.

Vandalia led 4-0 through five and a half innings, after scoring three runs in the third on a two-out rally against Brennan Poland, and one in the fifth off Swayde Sanders.

The comeback looked to have started with one out in the sixth, when Michael Woltman ripped a double to left and looked to score Adam Koester, who was thrown out at the plate by a perfect relay by Vandalia.

Still, Sanders came through with two outs in the sixth, lacing an RBI single to make it 4-1.Blake White led off the seventh by being hit by a pitch, and Taylor Martin had a pinch hit single with one out. Koester popped out, and an Alex Bohnhoff grounder to third seemed to be the game ender. It was booted, giving Effingham a second life.

Woltman responded with a two-run single, and pinch hitter Caleb Martin hit a dribbler down the third-base line for an RBI infield single to tie the game at 4-4. Poland struck out to end the inning.

Vandalia got right back to it, as a hit by pitch and a walk put runners on first and third with one out. Colin Ledbetter attempted a suicide squeeze, but the bunt was popped up foul to Taylor Martin behind the plate.

Martin caught the ball, fired it to third to Caleb Martin, who bobbled a bounced throw, caught it and tagged the runner to end the inning.

Effingham put runners on first and third with two outs, and Koester lined one to right that hung up a bit too long and was caught to end the eighth. Sanders allowed a double and a walk, but had a chance to end the ninth with two outs and Taylor Knisley at the plate.

He tripled to left-center, and was thrown out at home following a throwing error at the plate to make it 6-4. Bohnhoff led off with a walk, but Effingham's bats ran out and Vandalia came away with the 6-4 win.

Sanders took the loss, pitching 6.1 innings of relief and allowing three runs. Poland pitched the first 2.2 innings, and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. Woltman was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Sanders was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Caleb Martin was 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Koester, Poland, Ryan Barnes, Trenton Poe and Taylor Martin each had a single.

Effingham Post 120 falls to 5-5-1, and takes on Teutopolis Saturday as they resume their game from June 29.
