MATTOON — The 28th Annual Matoon Firecracker American Legion Classic was set to get underway Monday, but even despite sunny skies, the fields were still too wet from the weekend's rain to play.
As a result, the tournament will be pushed back exactly one day in its entirety, with Monday's games moving to Tuesday, Tuesday's to Wednesday, and so on.
The tournament is hosting both Junior and Senior Legion teams, with the Junior tournament running from Tuesday to Thursday and the Senior tournament running from Thursday to Sunday.
In Junior ball, Toledo's American Legion team and Shelby County Posts 289/611/725 are representing the area. Each team plays two games today.
Originally, the Shelby County team and Effingham Post 120 were the only Senior teams from the area in the 15-team tournament. Due to the rain out, Funkhouser, Ind. dropped out, and were replaced by St. Anthony's travel team.
All three local teams begin play Thursday.
