Shoes, Bulldog eliminated at state tennis

CHICAGO — The six local tennis players' seasons are over, as five Teutopolis Wooden Shoes and one St. Anthony Bulldog were eliminated from the Illinois state tennis tournament Thursday.

Of the six, Teutopolis' Elena Breer and Allison Vogt were the only players to win a match. Breer and Vogt lost their opener to Quincy's Sarah Boyd and Delaney O'Donnell 6-1, 6-1, sending them to the consolation bracket.

Breer and Vogt responded with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Chicago Christian's Grace Furlong and Raquel Hamstra, but were bounced by Homewood-Flossmoor's Brittany Henry and Kaela Mack in a 6-1, 6-3 loss.

The other Wooden Shoes' doubles team was out in two matches. Taylor Deters and Ashley Hemmen were defeated in their opener by Moline's Alyssa Ray and Molly McPherson 6-0, 6-1, then lost 6-3, 6-3 to Palatine Fremd's Maggie Hannah and Allison Tomal.

In singles play for Teutopolis, Holley Wright fell in her opening match, losing to Hampshire's Hannah Hougland 6-1, 6-3. She was then eliminated by Joliet Catholic Academy's Nina Bertino 6-1, 6-1.

St. Anthony's Jenny Walters shared Wright's fate, losing her first round match to Providence Catholic's Hannah Davis 6-1, 6-1. The consolation bracket matchup wasn't any easier, as she lost to Olivia Ray 6-0, 6-0.

The tennis season ends for all the area girls teams with the six players being eliminated.

Teutopolis advanced to state with its second straight sectional title.
