Teutopolis wins pool at Salem tourney

SALEM — The Teutopolis Lady Shoes kept up their stifling defense Saturday, allowing just 30 points per game in two wins at the Lady Wildcat Thanksgiving Tournament.

With a 42-32 win over Highland and a 53-28 victory over Olney, Teutopolis swept its pool play and heads back to Salem next weekend to play in the winners’ bracket.

Teutopolis, the second-ranked team in Class 2A, is now 4-0 to begin the season.

The Shoes played their closest game of the season Saturday morning, leading by just five points after the third on their way to a 10-point win.

Madeline Hartke led the way, scoring a team-high 16 points while grabbing six rebounds to top T-Town.

Cierra Thompson had nine points on the day. Haley Giles had six points, one block and one assist. Hartke and Jessica Schumacher had the team’s only other two assists with one each.

Thompson made her mark defensively as well, snatching four steals on the day as Highland turned the ball over 21 times.

Teutopolis 53, Olney 28

Things were easier in the nightcap against Olney, as Teutopolis took a 13-0 lead and only yielded 11 first-half points.

From there, they were already up 12 and continued to cruise in the second half to a 25-point win.

Hartke was the leading scorer again, tallying 17 points. Schumacher added nine, and GileS and Danielle Repking scored seven points each.

Schumacher led the team with seven rebounds, Thompson and Hannah Bueker each had two steals and Hartke had a team-high three assists.
