Effingham, Stew-Stras fall at IESA state

EFFINGHAM — Both Effingham and Stew-Stras saw excellent seventh-grade volleyball seasons come to an end Saturday, as both fell in the quarterfinals of the 7-4A and 7-1A state tournaments, respectively.

Effingham faced a tall task, taking on unbeaten Channahon at East Peoria Central for a semifinal berth.

Channahon flexed its muscles early, taking the first set easily with a 25-11 effort. The Mustangs responded in the second set, making a mtch of it, but fell 25-20.

Miranda Fox had Effingham's lone ace, Chloe Funneman had nine service points, while Carsyn Fearday and Fox each had four service points. Channahon totaled 10 aces on the day, while Nicole Lovato (13 service points and five aces) and Catherine Angus (10 service points) led the way.

Effingham's season ended with a 19-5 record. Channahon also defeated unbeaten Manteno in the state semis 25-18, 22-25, 25-17 to advance to the state title game against Mt. Zion Tuesday.

In Pawnee, Stew-Stras had a fight on its hands with Cissna Park. Both sets went back and forth, with neither team establishing a huge trend of momentum.

Cissna Park took the first set 25-19 and jumped out to a lead in the second set. The Comets cut the score to 23-20 late in the second set, but ran out of gas from there.

Mackenzi Tabbert led the Comets in aces (four) and service points (seven) on the day. Mackenzie Reed had two aces and three service points, and Hattie Waldhoff had one ace and four service points.

Cissna Park advanced to the semifinals before losing to Lovejoy.

Stew-Stras' season ends at 17-6.
