With just nine days before the inaugural Teutopolis/Effingham Holiday Tournament, a new team is joining the fray as a replacement.
Chicago Al Raby School for Community and Environment will officially be replacing Chicago Robeson in the tournament on Friday, Dec. 27 and Saturday, Dec. 28.
They take the place of Robeson in the Effingham and Charleston pool, playing Charleston at 3:30 p.m. Friday and Effingham at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Effingham Activities Director David Woltman said Chicago Robeson had some funding issues that prevented them from coming down.
Tournament committee member Mike Wilson said the talks have been ongoing to try and replace Robeson, with Al Raby stepping in.
“We were trying to work with (Robeson) to get something done, but they said they knew someone who would like to come and take their place,” Wilson said. “When we talked to Al Raby, they immediately said they’d come and we took them.”
The six-team tournament will be held at both Teutopolis and Effingham, with early sessions taking place at Teutopolis both days, and the late sessions — including Saturday’s championships — being played at Effingham.
It was crucial for the tournament to find a new team quickly to keep the schedule on track and establish the tournament, Wilson said.
“We had commitment from them about two weeks ago,” Wilson said. “We didn’t want to get stuck with an odd number of teams, or try to bring in someone’s JV team. That’s no good.”
The tournament begins at 2 p.m. Friday at Teutopolis High School with Teutopolis taking on Mt. Vernon.
