TEUTOPOLIS - The Effingham girls track team didn't have quite as much breathing room as its male counterpart.
St. Anthony gave Effingham a run for its money, but the Lady Hearts were not to be denied. Effingham finished with a team total of 84.5 points, while the Lady Bulldogs came in second at 68.5. Teutopolis hung tough, ultimately finishing with a team score of 33.Effingham arrived ready to take over the competition, successfully winning the 4x800 with a time 10:49.92 to pick up an early five points. The Lady Hearts also took first in the 4x400, smoking their competition by more than 27 seconds. The winning time of 4:33.06 added five more points for coach Dannette Williamson's team. Effingham came in second in the other two relays, adding three points in the 4x100 and 4x200.Teutopolis had its best showing of the meet in the relays that were not dominated by Effingham, pulling away for wins in both the 4x100 and 4x200. The Lady Shoes won by three-tenths of a second in the 4x100, narrowly edging the second-place Lady Hearts.Though the Hearts may have surrendered a few points in the shorter relays, Williamson's squad owned the individual races. To start the sprints, Kristina Rivera took home top honors with a 13.55 burst in the 100-meter dash. Effingham also won the 200 when Regan Keck crossed the finish line in 29.73. The 3200-meter run was one area where the Effingham team didn't come away victorious, due to the performance of St. Anthony's Carson Fonner. Fonner led from start-to-finish in all eight laps, finishing in 13:50.3, more than forty seconds faster than her closest competitor.Holly Moore won the long jump for the Lady Hearts with her 14 foot, 6.5 inch effort, and Effingham also took away a win in the triple jump with Cassi Green's 31-foot showing. The final win of the day came in the discus when Jantzen Michael hurled one 92 feet, five inches for the easy win.St. Anthony may not have won many events, but the Lady Bulldogs were in constant contention and turned in plenty of worthy performances. Aly Esker finished second in the 200-meter dash, Elizabeth Falconburg took home silver in the 800 and Madeline McDevitt finished one spot out of first in the high jump.
