Hearts earn Apollo sweep

EFFINGHAM — It took two different types of games, but Effingham grabbed a pair of Apollo Conference wins against Mt. Zion Saturday.

Effingham led for the majority of game one, but lost the lead in the seventh inning, going down 7-6 after leading 6-4 heading into the frame.

But Effingham rallied for two runs in the seventh and grabbed the win. Alex Carie had two RBIs and three walks, while Devin Mayfield, Drew Levitt, Trenton Frey, Kennan Mahaffey and Matt Steffen each knocked in a run.

Mayfield earned the win in game one with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, and kept going in game two, tossing a complete game in a 4-1 win.

He allowed four hits in seven innings, striking out three. Levitt had an RBI had went 2-for-2, while Carter Hayes drove in two runs of his own.

The Flaming Hearts host North Clay this afternoon.

Bulldogs shut out Lions

Alex Hoelscher, Zach Gardewine and Ben Hecht pitched seven innings of two-hit ball as St. Anthony bested Marshall 3-0 Saturday at Paul Smith Field.

Neither Hoelscher nor Hecht allowed a hit in their five innings of work, as they each struck out five. Gardewine allowed two hits in two innings while striking out four. Hoelscher walked two in three innings, and Hecht walked three in two innings.

Gardewine doubled for the lone extra-base hit for the Bulldogs on the day. Hecht drove in a run and singled on the day, while Jacob Schuette had an RBI without recording a hit.

Jacob Lorenz, Austin Bushur, Eli Dasenbrock and Hoelscher each had a single on the day.

The Bulldogs host Dieterich this afternoon.

Neoga splits with Flora

The Indians headed to Flora Saturday afternoon and came home with a 1-1 record after their doubleheader with the Wolves.

Flora took game one, as Neoga mustered just one run on seven hits in a 4-1 loss. Tyler Romack allowed four runs, but none were earned in six innings. He struck out 12.

Michael Baker had two singles and drove in Neoga’s lone run on the game.

After one run in the first game, Neoga put up 10 runs in the first inning of game two, winning 11-1 in five innings.

Romack led the way with a home run and three RBIs, while Jake Baker, Michael Baker, Riley Walk, Guy Walk and Zach Monroe each had an RBI of their own.

Guy Walk got the win, allowing one run in five innings.

Neoga (10-3) takes on Windsor/Stew-Stras on the road this afternoon.

St. Anthony wins Newton tourney

St. Anthony and Newton both went 2-1 in Saturday’s Newton round-robin tournament, but the Bulldogs took home the title due to their 7-1 win over the Eagles.

The Bulldogs downed Tolono Unity 6-3 in their other win, and lost to Arcola 11-7.

Newton topped Tolono 14-2 and Arcola 9-3 in their two wins.

Meghan Woltman tossed a one-hitter in the win over Newton, with Gabby Zerrusen notching the only hit. Brooke Koebele drove in the Eagles’ only run.

Makayla Walsh was 2-for-3 with two RBIs against Newton, while Paige Koester, Morgan Gardewine and Kate Richards each had two hits. Walsh also homered in the game against Tolono Unity.

The Bulldogs improve to 6-5 and take on Dieterich at home today.
