Late error sparks Robinson rally

Daily News

---- — TEUTOPOLIS — After falling behind 3-0 early in the game, a number of heady and great defensive plays kept Teutopolis Post 924 in their losers’ bracket game against Robinson Post 69.

Once they finally grabbed a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning, however, it was a defensive miscue that sparked a Robinson rally that eventually led to a 10-4 Robinson win and Teutopolis’ elimination from the District 24 tournament.

Up 4-3 in the eighth, Teutopolis’ Cody Will allowed the first two runners to reach on a walk and an infield single. Weston Shipman laid down a good bunt, and Will’s throw to first sailed over the head of Darren Probst, allowing a run to score and putting runners on second and third.

Justin Kenter came in, but couldn’t stem the damage. He hit the next batter, and would allow five more runners to come home on a mixture of hits and errors by the end of the inning.

Robinson sent 12 men to the plate in the eighth and exited with a 9-4 lead. They’d tack on another run in the ninth inning, and cruised to a 10-4 win from there.

Will was wild early, walking two and throwing two wild pitches that led to a run in the first inning. Robinson scored two more in the second after two leadoff walks and an error by Brock Mette, putting Teutopolis’ backs against the wall down 3-0.

Teutopolis kept battling, and Will settled down from there. With two on in the third, Will started an inning-ending double play and Teutopolis kept a runner off the board in the fourth when Tommy Flach and Kenter teamed up for a perfect relay to get Logan Johnson out at the plate to end the inning.

The defense sparked the offense. Flach led off with a single in the fourth, stole a base and scored on a Probst double. Probst would score on the next batter, when Kenter knocked him in with an RBI bloop single.

Jordan Thoele led off the fifth with a double off the wall and scored on a John Ungrund RBI single to tie up the game.

The defense kept things close again in the seventh. Robinson led off with a single, but Flach and Michael Gillespie had a pair of diving catches to record two of the inning’s outs, keeping the score tied.

Teutopolis briefly took the lead in the seventh. Will led off with a single and advanced to second on a Thoele sacrifice bunt. Pinch hitter Austin Hartke hit a bloop single to right, and a fielding error allowed Will to come home.

No Teutopolis played had more than one hit, with Probst, Kenter and Ungrund each going 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Will took the loss over seven innings of work, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits and five walks.

Robinson advances to today’s action, taking on Salem in the losers’ bracket. The winner faces Olney immediately afterward.
