TEUTOPOLIS — A number of mid-inning mistakes proved costly for Teutopolis Post 924 Wednesday night against visiting Olney Post 30. Post 924 surrendered two runs off wild pitches in the fourth, and allowed another run in the fifth off an error to fall 8-5.There was truly no room for mistakes for either team, as Post 924 began the game with eight players, picking up a ninth (Kyle Hardiek) in the third inning, and Post 30 was just able to round up the bare minimum of nine itself. After being held scoreless through the first two frames, Post 30 took its first lead against the man-down opponent in the top of the third. Tony Kuhlig (Olney) opened the inning with a double to center field, where no defender was stationed. Kuhlig reached home one batter later on an RBI single to left from Trystin Runyon (Olney) to push Post 30 ahead 1-0.But Post 924 answered the call, stringing off four straight runs in the bottom of the third to create a three-run lead. Hardiek (Teutopolis) singled, Tommy Flach (Teutopolis) was walked, and Jordan Bloemer lined a single up the gut to load the bags with no outs. Chase Wendling (Teutopolis/Kaskaskia) ripped a hard shot to first, where it took a high bounce and eluded first baseman Peyton Billington (Olney) to score a pair.Michael Gillespie (Teutopolis) and Tyler Repking (Teutopolis) added RBI singles for a 4-1 advantage before Post 30 could escape the inning with a 4-6-3 double play off Wade Jansen (Teutopolis). From there, however, Post 924's momentum went off the tracks. Alex Craig's (Olney) RBI single in the fourth brought Post 30 back within two, and a pair of wild pitches from Flach allowed two more to score. Elijah Knepper's (Newton) easy path home off the second tied the game at four runs apiece. In the fifth, Post 30 took the lead for good. Runyon reached first off an error by Post 924's Darren Probst, and was the beneficiary of another error three batters later to reach home. The real damage came in the sixth. Ahead 5-4, Runyon brought his second run of the game home with a sacrifice RBI to third, and Caleb Chesnut (Newton) delivered on the ensuing at-bat with an RBI double. The final run was scored off Post 924's third error of the game, this time coming on a sharp ground ball to third from Billington that eluded Wendling.Post 924 tried to create some late-game heroics in the seventh, plating a run off Wendling's rocket of a double to center field, but the deficit would stay at three. Knepper pitched six innings for Post 30, striking out nine to pick up the win. He scattered five hits and allowed four runs.Flach took the lost for Post 924, giving up eight runs off eight hits and two strikeouts.
