For most of the season, it's been two Hartkes working in tandem for the Teutopolis Lady Shoes, with Madeline and Anna Hartke each being key parts of the Teutopolis rotation.
On Tuesday, one Hartke was more than enough.
Top-seeded Teutopolis routed fifth-seeded Vandalia 56-24 in the Vandalia Regional semifinal, with Anna Hartke leading the team with 12 points and Madeline Hartke sidelined for the third-straight game with tendinitis in her left heel.
It was a team-first effort, with the scoring being very balanced for the Lady Shoes as they controlled the game from the opening tip.
"Tonight, we had some nice confident shots out there and that comes from the girls," said Teutopolis coach Laurie Thompson. "It was nice to see that, it wasn't one kid, it was all of them."
While the game was close early, with Teutopolis leading 6-5 nearly five minutes into the first quarter.
Things clicked from there, with Anna Hartke, Haley Giles and Cierra Thompson keying a 25-4 run to close the half and give Teutopolis a 31-9 lead.
Teutopolis aggressively pressed Vandalia as the half went on, with the Shoes forcing a number of turnovers or forcing the Vandals into contested quick shots.
Thompson said the defensive effort was a huge boost, with Giles' length disrupting the Vandals.
"That was a key to that second quarter, and Haley did a good job, long and lean up top," Thompson said. "Defensively, the first half, we did a good job keeping them off the boards and keeping them from taking the shots they wanted to take.
The effort wasn't as dominant in the second half, with Vandalia outscoring Teutopolis 8-6 in the third quarter before Teutopolis got the offense going again in the fourth.
Hartke was solid down low, with 12 points, Thompson added 10 while hitting two 3-pointers, Danielle Repking scored six, with Giles and Schumacher scoring six each.
Morgan Cripe topped Vandalia with 14 points. These two squads met in last year's regionals, with Vandalia missing a wide-open layup at the buzzer as Teutopolis escaped 44-43.
Teutopolis advances to the Vandalia Regional final, where they'll face Greenville (19-6) at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
As for Madeline Hartke, Thompson said it's a constant evaluation process for their senior star, who suited up Tuesday but neither warmed up nor played in the game.
"She'll be day-by-day. We'll wait and see," Thompson said. "If she's good to go, I'll play her, if she's not good to go, I'm not going to do that to a kid. She's got a full college career ahead of her."
