TEUTOPOLIS — It wasn't the easiest game to watch for Teutopolis coach Laurie Thompson to watch Thursday night.

Both her Lady Shoes and the Olney Lady Tigers struggled with ball control, with turnovers and fouls coming frequently on both ends.

But Teutopolis made enough plays down the stretch and took home a 53-48 win to improve to 12-2.

"It was horribly sloppy," Thompson said. "Olney converted on our silly turnovers, and it nearly cosst us the game."

Teutopolis led after every quarter, but the game was tight throughout. The Shoes led 24-20 at the half and 30-28 heading into the fourth quarter.

The teams went back and forth in the quarter, with Madeline Hartke and Cierra Thompson carrying Teutopolis' offense and Kelsey Shipman carrying the load for Olney.

Teutopolis led 42-39 with two minutes left, and would extend that lead to 50-44 with 37.2 seconds left after a pair of free throws by Danielle Repking.

Shipman made a quick two, and Marley Miller stole a Teutopolis pass while the Tigers pressed, took it down the court and sccored to make it 50-48 with 17.8 seconds remaining.

Cierra Thompson went to the line and made one of two, giving Olney a chance to tie the game with 12 seconds left.

Shipman forced up a long three and airballed it, and Teutopolis took possession with 3.7 seconds. Thompson was fouled, hit both free throws and clinched the win.

Hartke led the way for the Shoes, scoring 25 points on the night.

"Madeline does what Madeline does," Thompson said. "She creates offense for herself."

Cierra Thompson had 15 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter.

Still, offensive balance remains an issue for Teutopolis, Laurie Thompson said.

"The other girls need to start creating for themselves," she said. "That's something we need to do by now. We're not going to win games like this for much longer."

Thompson credited the Shoes' performance at the free throw line in their final quarter on their way to the win.

Shipman had 15 points for Olney, Rachel Wisner had 11 points and Miller added 10 points.

The Shoes are off for the holidays, and will compete in the Edwardsville Tournament on Dec. 27 and 28.
