Golf roundup Effingham boys win first conference title since 1997 Girls take third

---- — Effingham's recent hot streak led to the ultimate goal of the regular season, as the Flaming Hearts won their first Apollo Conference championship since 1997 Friday. The Flaming Hearts carded a team score of 316, besting the Mattoon Green Wave's 323 in Paris. "There were five teams that could win today and we are very fortunate to win today," said Effingham coach Jeff Schafer. "The kids were awesome today. We hung in there and battled."Effingham's strength as of late has been balanced play between its scorers, and today, it was Jake Linders' turn to shine. Linders' 74 was the low score of the day, winning the Apollo Conference tournament. He played the final 16 holes at a 1-under par clip.It's Effingham second straight individual champion, as Jackson Wendling won last year's conference tournament. Wendling had another strong day, shooting a 76 for third place and earning All-Apollo honors in the process.Freshman Callaway Smith shot an 80 and missed the All-Apollo team by one stroke. Sean Sandifer rounded out the scorers with an 85. Salem took third with a 337, Charleston finished fourth with an identical 337, Mt. Zion earned fifth with a 338 and Paris finished sixth with a 370. The Hearts will look to capitalize on their strong conference play Tuesday when they had to the Mt. Vernon Regional Tuesday.

Lady Hearts finish third in ApolloThe Apollo Conference tournament was a tight one in Paris Thursday, with Salem besting Mattoon by two strokes and Effingham by six to win the conference. Salem finished the day with a 396, led by Megan Gallatin's 87. Mattoon shot a 398, topped by Katie Holsapple's 92 and Effingham's 402 was good for third, led by Morgan Wilson's 86. Wilson's score was good for third on the day, trailing only Mt. Zion's Ashley Miller (83) and Charleston's Lauren Chappell (74). Chappell was the conference tournament champion, despite her Trojans finishing in fifth place with a 417. Hope Collier shot a 98 for Effingham, the seventh-best score of the day. Collier and Wilson were both named to the All-Apollo team. Alex Brummer finished with a 102 on the day, Madison Weis shot a 116 for the tournament and Kyalee Tonn carded a 118. The Lady Hearts' regular season is over, with their regional tournament being hosted by Cumberland Wednesday at Meadowview Golf Course in Mattoon.
