Effingham (2-3, 2-0 Apollo) at Paris (2-3, 0-2 Apollo), 7 p.m. Friday
Effingham is on a two-game win streak and will look to maintain their share of the Apollo Conference lead this weekend on the road against Paris (2-3, 0-2 Apollo).
Friday’s matchup will be Effingham’s second road game of the season. The Flaming Hearts won their first road game two weeks ago against Charleston, 26-13, and took care of business on Homecoming on Friday against Salem.
The Hearts (2-3, 2-0 Apollo) held on to a 9-0 lead over Salem on Friday, winning 9-6, as Effingham stopped Salem on fourth downs twice in the final eight minutes of the fourth quarter.
Effingham’s Zach Miller rushed for 64 yards on the ground, while quarterback Dylan Wolff’s touchdown pass to Marcus Robinson in the first quarter turned out to be the only Hearts’ score. Michael Carie’s 21-yard field goal proved to be the game winner.
Paris is coming off of a loss at home against Mt. Zion (1-4, 1-1 Apollo) during which Paris’ defense gave up 70 points, which is the most points any Apollo team has allowed in a game this season. Mt. Zion’s defense held the previous high, giving up 66 points to Jerseyville on Sept. 13.
A three-game losing streak faces Paris as it hosts Effingham this weekend. Paris beat Cumberland and Watseka to start the first two weeks of the season, but have lost three straight, including an Apollo matchup against Salem.
During the losing streak, Paris has given up 54 points per game. In week three, Paris lost to Central 62-0, before losing to Salem 32-15.
Effingham is in a tie for first place in the Apollo Conference with Mattoon, which plays Salem (1-4, 1-1 Apollo) this weekend at home. Salem is tied for second place in the conference with Mt. Zion.
