Casey-Westfield was ranked number two in Class 1A when they came to Cumberland Friday night, and showed why to the Cumberland Pirates as the Warriors ran to a 60-8 victory.
Casey scored four first quarter touchdowns and were up 26-0 by the end of the first, as quarterback Nicco Stepina and Austin Glidewell each had two scores.
They'd score four more times going into the fourth quarter, blitzing the Pirates on both sides of the ball.
"They're a good football team," said Cumberland coach Kevin Maynard. "We knew they were going to be fast, but film does not do them justice on how fast they really are.
"I'd be hard-pressed to say there's a team in this part of the state in Class 1A that can match up with them speed-wise."
Down 54-0, Cumberland got on the board with a two-yard touchdown run by Dillon Howard with in the fourth quarter and Keaton Titus converted the two-point conversion.
Casey responded with a kickoff return for a touchdown by Ethan Lucas, cementing the final score at 60-8.
Cumberland gained 142 yards on the night, led by Houston Napier's 45 yards on 14 carries. Titus carried the ball six times for 38 yards, and Howard had three carries for 10 yards and the score.
"From the onset of the game, I thought we moved the ball pretty well," Maynard said. "We had some bright spots in a game like tonight."
Stepina had 107 yards passing on five completions, and carried the ball six times for 180 and three scores. Glidewell carried six times for 88 yards.
Holden Elwood had three tackles and Austin Kline had 2.5.
Cumberland falls to 1-4 and 1-2 in the Little Illini Conference's Eastern Division. To have a shot at the playoffs, they'll have to win out.
Ever the optimist, Maynard said the road begins next week at home against Red Hill (2-3, 2-1).
"We talked about it," he said. "We feel like we have some games coming here that we can win. We're wanting to give ourselves a chance, "
