---- — The Effingham Junior Legion Post 120 team finished with a 1-1-1 record in this weekend’s Altamont Summer Slam wooden bat tournament, narrowly missing out on the title in a tough, 2-0 defeat to the host team.
Effingham Post 120 started out the tournament with a 5-2 victory over Newton, scoring five unanswered runs after surrendering an early pair. Carter Hayes (Effingham) finished with a triple and an RBI, and Blake White (Effingham) plated another.
Ryan Barnes (Effingham) pitched a complete game for Post 120, striking out 10 Newton batters and scattering four hits.
Effingham and Centralia played to a 6-6 tie in the next game, with Post 120 scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh to even the score. Neither team scored in the only extra inning. Caleb Martin (Effingham) had two RBIs off a single and double, while Brennan Poland (Effingham) also scored two off a pair of singles and a double.
Post 120 racked up 11 hits in the tie, which was good enough to advance to the title game against Altamont.
The bats went cold in the championship, however, as Effingham was held to just one hit through seven innings in the 2-0 shutout. Swayde Sander’s (Effingham) single was the lone hit of the game for Effingham.
Kevin Daugherty took the loss on the mound, allowing two earned runs off eight hits. Daugherty struck out six.
For Altamont, Aaron Goeckner and Ryan Armstrong each hit RBI singles for the two runs. Cole Borders pitched a seven-inning one-hitter, striking out ten Effingham batters for the win.
