The Effingham Lady Hearts didn’t let the calendar turning to 2014 stop their red hot streak Saturday at Cahokia.
Effingham moved to 15-0 for the 2013-14 season with a 57-43 win over Cahokia, and has now won 37 of its last 38 games dating back to last season.
While the Hearts usually rely on a balanced offensive attack, it was the Josie Zerrusen show Saturday.
The senior forward netted 30 points on the night, with no other Heart tallying more than eight.
“Josie had a great game making play after play, and the kids did a great job of finding her,” said Effingham coach Jeff Schafer.
It was a tight game through the first half, with the Hearts taking a 15-13 lead after one and pushing it to 32-23 after two quarters.
Schafer credited his team for making the necessary adjustments in the locker room, and later on the floor, to take home the victory.
“We played better defensively in the second half, but had there or four chances to really put the game away and didn’t,” he said. “ They just kept making plays and, to their credit, just kept grinding. We did a nice job the last three minutes executing and making making our free throws.”
Caitlin Kaufman had eight points, Lauren Stephenson added six, and Stephanie Robb and Maddy Field each scored four points.
Effingham will look to remain undefeated during their next game. They are scheduled to play Newton tonight, but both Effingham and Newton canceled school for Monday Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Hearts will host Salem Thursday night.
