Teutopolis' Weichman finalizes college plans

Effingham Daily News

---- — When Emily Weichman decided to attend St. Louis College of Pharmacy, cross country was an afterthought.

After watching her grandather fall ill, she decided she wanted to help people recover, and pharmaceutical studies fit her best.

“I decided on St. Louis College of Pharmacy because I always wanted to go to pharmacy school after my grandpa got really sick,” she said. “I didn’t decide to run cross country until I talked to their coach.”

Weichman spoke with Eutectics coach David Baker, but what really made an impact was her phone call with recent Newton graduate and current STLCOP runner James Lidy.

“(Lidy) said he’s always had a blast running,” Weichman said. “The team is really welcoming.”

Weichman is excited to joing the ranks of collegiate athletics, but knows that STLCOP places academics first and foremost.

“They’re a competitive school, but the focus is on the schoolwork as well,” she said.

A steady performer for her first two miles, Weichman said the third and final mile of her race will have to improve when she joins her new teammates. In spite of the challenge, she is looking forward to the dramatic step-up in talent.

“I’m looking forward to the big competition,” she said. “In high school, you run against the same people all the time. I’m ready for new competition.”
