Effingham Daily News
Effingham didn't advance to the state championship game over the weekend, but had a dominating performance Thursday night to take third place in the state.
The Mustangs bested Taylorville 30-20 in the ClasS 7-4A third-place game, shutting out Taylorville in the first quarter and taking a commanding 22-7 lead to the locker room at the half.
The offense stalled out a bit in the second half, but it didn't matter with the big first half lead the Mustangs had built.
Carsyn Fearday led Effingham with 14 points, Abby Weis scored six, Madison Buscher and Miranda Fox each scored four points and Skyler Schafer had two.
Effingham finishes the year 20-2 and third in the state's highest seventh-grade class. Canton Ingersoll downed Frankforst Summit Hill for the state title.
Their cohorts from Teutopolis were also playing for third in Class 7-3A, and found themselves in a low-scoring affair with Dunalp Valley.
Dunlap Valley only scored 15 points, but it was enough, as Teutopolis was edged 15-13 in the end.
Dunlap's defense held Teutopolis to one point in both the first and third quarters.
Olivia Niemerg had five points, Savannah Grimes scored three, Morgan Mette and Julia Frey each scored two and Savanna Gebben had one.
Teutopolis finished the season 22-5 in fourth place of Class 7-3A. Hillsboro beat Pleasant Plains 36-27 for the state title.
